A potentially dangerous vulnerability has been discovered in TimThumb script, which is one of the most popular image resizing utility used by most of wordpress themes. This issue was first reported by Mark Maunder after his blog was hacked using this timthumb.php file/script.

This vulnerability allows hackers and other third parties to upload and run PHP code in the timthumb cache directory. When the uploaded PHP code is run and executed, the attacker can do whatever they want with the affected site or blog.

Precautions to be taken:

If your current WordPress theme is uses timthumb.php, make sure that you update to the latest version of TimThumb and to reglularly check on the official TimThumb site for updates and announcements.

Aside from updating the TimThumb file there’s another thing you need to do. Open up the timthumb.php or thumb.php file with a text editor and look for this line ALLOW_EXTERNAL and make sure that the value is set to FALSE.

Once ALLOW_EXTERNAL is set to FALSE, next thing to do is remove the domains inside the $allowedSites array to ensure that remote

If You Do Not Use TimThumb
If you don’t use or need timthumb.php but have other WordPress themes stored in your wp-content/themes folder that uses timthumb.php, it is recommended that the timthumb.php or thumb.php file or even the entire theme or plugin folder be deleted/removed from your web server.

If you are new to WordPress then running WordPress on PC is highly recommended because if you try out WordPress on server, you might just screw up things and you might have to restart again. When I was new to WordPress I started with XAMPP and later moved on to the server.

Running WordPress on local PC is also great if you are a plugin and WordPress theme developers.

Before we start, we should have three things

1. XAMPP: XAMPP is a very easy to install Apache Distribution for Linux, Solaris, Windows and Mac OS X. The package includes the Apache web server, MySQL, PHP, Perl, a FTP server and phpMyAdmin. You can download XAMPP here http://sourceforge.net/projects/xampp/

2. WORDPRESS: WordPress is web software you can use to create a beautiful website or blog. You can download WordPress here http://Wordpress.org/download/

3. THEMES AND PLUGINS: There are many free and paid themes available for WordPress. You might want to download some themes and check out how they work. Each theme offers its own features and style. You can download some free themes here http://www.topwpthemes.com

Ok then, now we have the tools required to setup WordPress on our PC. Now let’s start the process.

We begin with installing XAMPP. Just double click the setup file and extract the setup files to any drive you like. The default will be C: (if it’s your system drive). The installer will create a folder C:/XAMPP and will install all necessary files there. Just follow the instruction on setup process and you will be fine.

Next we will have to start MySQL and APACHE services. To start these just go to Start->All programs->XAMPP for windows->XAMPP Control Panel. The control panel should look like this

Now you have to start Apache and MySql services. Just start these two services and you can close the control panel now.

Next we will start the XAMPP just installed with our web browser. You can use your favorite browser. I am using Google Chrome for now. Just type http://127.0.0.1 or http://localhost/ on address bar and you will see XAMPP interface (If you don’t I think you should restart your PC). Choose your language preference and we are good to go with next step.

Now we start with setting up the database. On your XAMPP interface go to phpMyAdmin located at left side of the browser. Now you will see something like this

Now under Create new database type wordpress. This is the name of your database on MySql.

Select utf8_unicode_ci for the collation. This is the last selection in the drop-down list.

Now click on create button and you have just finished creating the database.

Now unzip the WordPress file you have downloaded earlier and copy it to following location C:\xampp\htdocs.

Now open the file C:\xampp\htdocs\Wordpress\wp-config-sample.php on notepad or any other text editor and edit the following parameters

1. The DB_NAME will be WordPress in single quotes – ‘wordpress’
2. The DB_USER will be ‘root’
3. The DB_PASSWORD should be blank. If you see anything else just delete it. It should look like this – ”
4. Close and save this file as wp-config.php. You can also rename this file once you have edited and saved the file.

Now, go to http://localhost/Wordpress/wp-admin/install.php

If everything went fine then you will see a window like this or a bunch for error messages on browser? If you see error then please read above instructions carefully and try again.

Now, fill in the details and click on Install WordPress. Once WordPress is installed you will be given a link to sign in. Just enter your details and click on login. Username for WordPress is admin and password is the one you choose above.

If you have provided correct username and password, you will now see WordPress dashboard.

That’s it folks, you are now ready to use WordPress on your pc with xampp.

Final Notes:

1. To access your WordPress dashboard again, just go to http://localhost/Wordpress/wp-admin/

2. To see your WordPress blog just go to http://localhost/Wordpress/

3. To install new theme, go to C:\xampp\htdocs\Wordpress\wp-content\themes and paste your theme there.

4. To install new plugins, go to C:\xampp\htdocs\Wordpress\wp-content\plugins and paste the plugin directory there.
