Google is celebrating its 13th Birthday today with a new google doodle on their Homepage. Google started its Journey in January 1996 as a research project started by Larry Page and Sergey Brin and both were PhD students at Stanford University in California. at that time most search engines ranked results by just counting how many times the search terms appeared on the page, the two theorized about a better system that analyzed the relationships between websites. This new theory was called pagerank where a website’s relevance was determined by the number of pages, and the importance of those pages, that linked back to the original site.

Early in 1999, while still graduate students, Brin and Page decided that the search engine they had developed was taking up too much of their time from academic pursuits. They went to Excite CEO George Bell and offered to sell it to him for $1 million. He rejected the offer.

In March 1999, the company moved its offices to Palo Alto, California, home to several other noted Silicon Valley technology startups. The next year, against Page and Brin’s initial opposition toward an advertising-funded search engine, Google began selling advertisements associated with search keywords. In order to maintain an uncluttered page design and increase speed, advertisements were solely text-based. Keywords were sold based on a combination of price bids and click-throughs, with bidding starting at five cents per click.

Since 2001, Google has acquired many companies, mainly focusing on small venture capital companies. In 2004, Google acquired Keyhole, Inc. The start-up company developed a product called Earth Viewer that gave a 3-D view of the Earth. Google renamed the service to Google Earth in 2005. Two years later, Google bought the online video site YouTube for $1.65 billion in stock. On April 13, 2007, Google reached an agreement to acquire DoubleClick for $3.1 billion, giving Google valuable relationships that DoubleClick had with Web publishers and advertising agencies. Later that same year, Google purchased GrandCentral for $50 million. The site would later be changed over to Google Voice. On August 5, 2009, Google bought out its first public company, purchasing video software maker On2 Technologies for $106.5 million. Google also acquired Aardvark, a social network search engine, for $50 million. In April 2010, Google announced it had acquired a hardware startup, Agnilux.

The tech giant is inviting students ages 13 through 18 from all over the world to compete — and the prizes won’t just be shiny blue ribbons, either. Google (Google) will be handing out scholarships and work opportunities to the most impressive entrants.

Youngsters will be able to submit their projects online, presumable through the Science Fair’s website, which has yet to launch with full details.

On January 11 at 9 a.m. EST, Google will host a live event on its brand new Science Fair YouTube Channel. More details about the fair will be announced then; we’re assuming the site will be fleshed out at that time, as well.

The global science competition is being hosted in partnership with CERN (the European Organization for Nuclear Research), LEGO, National Geographic and Scientific American. The goal is “to create a new kind of online science competition that is more global, open and inclusive than ever before.”

Teachers who want to receive classroom materials, including posters, stickers and bookmarks, as well as get registration information, can start signing up now.

This is one Google event we’ll be following with great interest; we can’t wait to see what cool entries will be coming in from young minds around the globe.

related:url same as “what’s related” on search engine result page.

site:domain restricts search results to the given domain only.

allinurl: shows only pages with all terms in the url.

inurl: like allinurl, but only for the next query word.

allintitle: shows only results with terms in title.

intitle: similar to allintitle, but only for the next word. “intitle:webmasterworld google” finds only pages with webmasterworld in the title, and google anywhere on the page.

cache:url will show the Google version of the passed url.

info:url will show a page containing links to related searches, backlinks, and pages containing the url. This is the same as typing the url into the search box.

spell: will spell check your query and search for it.

stocks: will lookup the search query in a stock index.

filetype: will restrict searches to that filetype. “-filetype:doc” to remove Microsoft word files.

daterange: is supported in Julian date format only. 2452384 is an example of a Julian date.

maps: If you enter a street address, a link to Yahoo Maps and to MapBlast will be presented.

phone: enter anything that looks like a phone number to have a name and address displayed. Same is true for something that looks like an address (include a name and zip code)

site:www.somesite.net “+www.somesite.+net” tells you how many pages of your site are indexed by google

allintext: searches only within text of pages, but not in the links or page title

This one is undoubtedly the most amazing Google tricks I have ever seen. I am not going to tell what happens here. You have to find it for yourselves. What you have to do is

1. Go to images.google.com
2. Type a search query. Anything you want like home or car or anything.
3. Then press search button.
4. You should land on the result page.
5. Now paste the code given below in the address bar (where you type URL) and then press ENTER.

Here are some great Google search tips and tricks. I hope that this information will be useful for you.
1. Use “site” command to see all the images of a site. In Google images site (images.google.com) enter site: www.microsoft.com
2. If you want to search a quote/phrase simply type “quotes or phrase” with the quote symbol. This method is very useful if you want to limit your search result.
3. Try searching like this ~money and it will display synonyms of words in a search result like coin, cash and currency etc. To exclude any synonyms simply type ~money –cash -coin
4. If you want definition on something just type define: computer
5. If you want to search pages containing either one or other keywords use OR word. Example: type man or women this will return pages containing “man” as well as the pages that include “women” (not necessarily both) and those pages that include both words. Note that if you type man women result page will contain results for pages with both man and women.
6. To include any word in your search result type your keyword + word to include example: electricity + bulb
7. To exclude any word in your search result type your keyword – word to include example: electricity – bulb
8. If you want to search a page with certain title simply type intitle: your phrase example: intitle: computer
9. If you want to search for universities then you would better go to www.google.com/options/universities.html
