Skype is a very popular means of voice and video calling which can be used with the help of the Internet. Skype has been designed based on the Kazaa file sharing program. The headquarters of Skype is in Luxembourg and France. It also has offices in many other parts of Europe, Asia as well as the United States of America.

There are two main kinds of machines which will be used as a part of the Skype network. One is known as the ordinary host or the Skype client while the other is the super node or SN. Any normal person who is making use of Skype will be considered as an ordinary host which has been connected to the super node. These super nodes are the names which have been given to the various servers of Skype which can be found in many different parts of the world. However the Skype client should also be aware of the server to which the connection needs to be established.

Every Skype client will have a table which will contain the IP addresses and port numbers of all the super nodes which are available. This is also known as the host cache and it will be found in the windows registry of the Skype client. Every time, a user logs into Skype from his computer, the data from the host cache will be read first and the first IP port will be selected. Then the Skype client will connect to that super node.
It is not possible to conduct a trace of a Skype client very easily. However if a policeman or a law enforcement officer has managed to obtain a court order then the people working at Skype will be forced to reveal details which can be obtained from their logs starting from the name and address of the user to the time at which the call has been made.

A lot of people decide to make use of vouchers in order to make Skype payments. But some people will provide a false name and address when they are making these voucher payments on Skype. But these false names and addresses will definitely appear on the Skype logs. It is also possible for law enforcement people to obtain a court order and ask the Internet service provider to provide the name and address of the specific person who is being investigated. It is not possible to trace a Skype user who has provided a false name and address in order to create a Skype id and paid using a voucher. He/she can make a Skype call from an Internet cafe which has the facility of Wi-Fi.  

There is no method of tracing the original user of the Skype id when the call has been made in this manner. More than one billion people have downloaded Skype onto their computers during the year 2008 and now Skype has become one of the most popular software applications which is being used by people all over the world.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs (1955-2011) has step down from the position of Apple chief executive. He is stricken by cancer and this forced him to quit the position as CEO. He is pioneer and visionary man whose idea was a driving force behind iconic products like Mac computer, iPhone, iPad and iPod. He is out of the CEO but he will hold a more passive position as chairman.

Apple is the world’s second most valuable company by market capitalization. Now, Tim Cook will be succeeding Jobs.

Steven Paul ‘Steve’ Jobs was born on February 24, 1955. He is cofounder, chairman and former CEO of Apple Inc. He served as CEO of Pixar Animation Studios, became also a member of board of directors of The Walt Disney Company in 2006. Jobs was born in San Francisco, California and was adopted by Clara and Paul Jobs of Mountain view, California who named him Steven Paul. Jobs biological parents Abdul Fattah Jandali, a Syrian greaduate student who later became a political science professor and Joanne Simpson an American graduate student who became a speech language pathologist later married giving birth to Jobs biological sister, novelist Mona Simpson.

Jobs went to Cupertino Junior High school and Homestead High school and regularly went to after school lectures at Hewlett-Packard Company in Palo Alto California.  He was hired there and worked there as a summer employee. In 1972, he graduated from high school and went to Reed College but he dropped out after only one semester. Later he said “If I had never dropped in on that single course in college, Mac would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts.”

He is ranked 43^rd wealthiest American by Forbes with an estimated net wealth at $5.1 billion in 2009.

Over the years, we’ve expanded Gmail‘s communication abilities by allowing you to make voice and video calls to other computers and more recently call phones. Until now, though, you were limited to making one call at a time. Today we’re excited to relax that restriction and allow you to make or receive multiple calls in Gmail.

If you’re in a call and make a second one, your first call will be put on hold while you talk on your new call. You can switch between calls by pressing the “Resume” button on the call you want to talk on, which will automatically put the previous call on hold.

Receiving incoming calls while you’re in another call is just as easy: you’ll receive a notification of the incoming call and can choose to accept it or not. If you take the new call, the previous call will be put on hold.

Whether you make a second call or not, you can now put any call on hold — useful in case you need to talk to someone in the room or grab something off the stove. Just press the “Hold” button and then “Resume” to start talking again.

This feature works across all call types (voice, video, and phone); the only restriction is that a maximum of two outgoing calls to physical phones can be placed at once.

Gmail is undoubtedly one of the most customizable email service around and adding to that facility, now you can choose your own image as a custom background for gmail. Gmail has just added a new “Create your own theme” option and tool which can be used to select background images and the theme’s colors.

You can find the new option in the Themes tab in Settings. Clicking on it brings up an easy palette chooser for text, link, and background colors. When it comes to choosing images, you can use Picasa image or upload a new one from your hard drive for the background. You can change both the main body and the footer images.

Here you can choose your background image as well as other colors. Go play around with this new feature and see if you can create a new theme for yourself.

Rockmelt is a social media web browser that integrates various social medias on its interface. The idea of Rockmelt is a truly unique when it comes to browser and surfing the web.  Rockmelt highly focuses on Google search and two social medias (should I say two very popular social media) Facebook and Twitter.

To download rockmelt, you are required to connect with your Facebook account so that you will receive an invitation email. Right now Rockmelt is supported for Windows OS and Mac OS X. Rockmelt browser is based on Chromium project from Google.

Rockmelt has a sidebar on the left side of the windows which makes it easier to connect with friends and start the conversation. You can chat with your friends in a separate window give a sensation of almost using an IM client. You can see who is online via this sidebar along with their profile picture. For a heavy facebook user, this is a great feature. You don’t have to open facebook to chat. Further, rockmelt has the ability to create favorite list of contact and post on their wall without leaving the page you are in. There is another sidebar which will allow you to view your wall and displays notification.    

If you are a twitter user, then you have to use rockmelt. The sidebar of rockmelt contains a twitter integration option where you can view recent tweets without actually going to twitter.com. You can post new tweets from this sidebar as well.

Rockmelt is also integrated with Google search so you don’t have to go to google site to make a simple search.

A rumor has it that a Norwegian member of parliament has nominated Wikileaks for the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize. The Member of Parliament is Shorre Valen who belongs to Socialist Left party and he announced this on his blog which was a big surprise for most of the people.

“WikiLeaks have contributed to the struggle for [human rights, democracy and freedom of speech] globally, by exposing (among many other things) corruption, war crimes and torture — sometimes even conducted by allies of Norway,” he wrote.

He also mentioned the positive role that wikileaks has played in uprisings in Tunisia as well as the uprising happening in Middle East. The uprising in Tunisia is a great event because it helped in abdication of President Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali after 24 years of rule.

Wikileaks is also responsible for publishing the information on more than 2000 prominent individuals who may have committed tax evasion and kept this money on Swiss bank.

Its website, launched in 2006 under The Sunshine Press organization, claimed a database of more than 1.2 million documents within a year of its launch. WikiLeaks describes its founders as a mix of Chinese dissidents, journalists, mathematicians, and start-up company technologists from the United States, Taiwan, Europe, Australia, and South Africa. Julian Assange, an Australian Internet activist, is generally described as its director. The cumulative effort of Wikipedia’s millions of contributors means you are a click away from figuring out what a myocardial infarction is, or the cause of the Agacher Strip war, or who Spangles Muldoon was. This is an unplanned miracle, like “the market” deciding how much bread goes in the store. Wikipedia, though, is even odder than the market: not only is all that material contributed for free, it is available to you free; even the servers and system administrators are funded through donations. That it would become such a miracle was not obvious at its inception and so, on the occasion of its 10th birthday, it’s worth retelling the improbable story of its genesis.

Ten years ago today, Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger were stuck trying to create Nupedia, an online encyclopedia with a seven-step publishing process. Unfortunately, that also meant seven places where things could grind to a halt. However, after nearly a year of work, almost no articles had actually been published.

So, 10 years ago tomorrow, Wales and Sanger decided to try a wiki, as a way of cutting through some of that process. Sanger sent an email to Nupedia collaborators about this new way of working, saying: “Humour me. Go there and add a little article. It will take all of five or ten minutes.”

The “Humour me” bit was necessary because the wiki is social media at its most radical. Invented in the mid-90s by Ward Cunningham, a wiki has at its core only one technical function: edit. You don’t need permission to add, alter, or delete text, and when you are done, you don’t need permission to publish.

More remarkably, though, a wiki also has at its core only one social operation: I care. The people who edit pages are the ones who care enough to edit them. Putting the people who care in charge, rather than anointing experts or authorities, was so radical that Wales and Sanger didn’t propose replacing Nupedia with a wiki. Instead, they proposed using the wiki to generate raw material for Nupedia.

The participants, however, had other ideas. The ability to create an article in five minutes, and to make an existing article a little better in less, was so infectious that in a matter of days there were more articles on the nascent wiki than on Nupedia. The wiki was so good, and so different from Nupedia, it was soon moved to its own site. Wikipedia was born. (Nupedia was shut down a few months later; Sanger also left the project.)

That process continues today, making Wikipedia an ordinary miracle for more than 250 million people a month. Every single day for the last 10 years Wikipedia has got better because someone – several million someones in all – decided to make it better. Sometimes that meant starting a new article. Mostly it meant editing an existing one. Occasionally it meant defending Wikipedia against vandalism. Always it meant caring. Most participants care a little, editing only one article. A handful care a lot, contributing hundreds of thousands of edits, across thousands of articles, over years. Most importantly, taken together, all of us have contributed enough to make Wikipedia what we have today. What looks like a stable thing is in fact a result of ceaseless attempts to preserve what is good, and to improve what isn’t. Wikipedia is best understood not as a product with an organisation behind it, but as an activity that happens to leave an encyclopedia in its wake.

That shift, from product to activity, has involved the most amazing expansion of peer review ever: Wikipedia’s editor-in-chief is a rotating quorum of whoever is paying attention. Many of Wikipedia’s critics have focused on the fact that the software lets anyone edit anything; what they miss is that the social constraints of the committed editors keep that capability in check. As easy as the software makes it to do damage, it makes it even easier to undo damage.

Imagine a wall where it was easier to remove graffiti than add it: the amount of graffiti on such a wall would depend on the commitment of its defenders. So with Wikipedia; if all its passionate participants were to stop caring, the whole thing would be gone by next Thursday, overrun by vandals and spammers. If you can see Wikipedia right now, it means that again, today, the good guys won.

Wikipedia isn’t perfect, of course. Many mediocre articles need improvement. The editors are not diverse enough in age, gender or ethnicity. Biographies of the living remain a persistent site of mischief. Defences erected against vandals and spammers also see off novices and exhaust old-timers. But Wikipedia isn’t just an activity at the level of the articles; from the individual edits all the way up to the culture of the whole, Wikipedia is a public good created by the public, so it falls to the people who care to try to take on these problems as well. As long as that culture continues to embrace “be bold” as a core value, its status as one of the largest cumulative acts of generosity in history will persist. So happy 10th birthday to Wikipedia, and ardent thanks to the millions of people who have added and altered and argued and amended, the people who have created the most widely used reference work in the world. Thanks for telling us the story of the Stonewall riots and how Pluto got demoted to “dwarf planet”; about the Great Rift Valley and the Indian Ocean tsunami; about lion fish and tiger teams and bear markets.
