Spain wins the World Cup Football
The Spanish team widened its legend on July 11 after successfully defeating Holland in the final of the South African World Cup played at the Soccer City, as it joined the selected group of nations, like Germany and France, who chained a European Championship and World Cup in succession. The pupils of Vicente del Bosque took up the victory two years ago in the final of the Euro Cup in Vienna, then the hand of Luis Aragones, a historic event. To date, only the then West Germany came to reach this milestone after their triumphs in European Championship in Belgium in 1972 and 1974 World Cup held at home.
France repeated their feat in the hand of Zinedine Zidane, but in reverse. In 1998 France was crowned champion for the first time in the planet’s last World Cup held in twentieth century, while in 2000, the European championship held in Belgium and Holland, also tasted the honey of glory after agonistic victory (2-1) in the final against Italy.
The final was a historic landmark, as Spain, besides being the first time became champion, and the eighth team to win a World Cup.
The FIFA World Cup was first held in 1930. Since then, every four years except 1942 and 1946, which was disputed by the World War, the best teams in the world compete to decide which country is the strongest in the sport.
Despite having been held 19 times, only seven teams had won the World Cup. Brazil tops the list with five trophies, followed by Italy, with four, while Germany has been three times champions. Uruguay and Argentina have two Cups and England, France and now Spain, one each.
Brazil and Italy are also the only teams that have won two consecutive championships: Italy in 1934 and 1938, and Brazil in 1958 and 1962. Selected winner in South Africa will become the second in history to win a World Cup held outside the continent. The former Brazil succeeded in Japan and South Korea in 2002.
The Johannesburg final between Holland and Spain was to determine the eighth World Cup champion. The Netherlands touched glory on two occasions before Sunday, when the ‘Clockwork Orange’ played the end of 1974 and 1978. But Beckenbauer’s Germany first, and Kempes Argentina, four years later, deprived them of lifting the cup. This time around Spain has crossed their path.
For its part, Spain had never come so far in a World Cup. In its twelve units, including that of 1982 which was the host, the Spanish team was fourth place in Brazil 1950 as their best finish. Now, the red shirt looks like a star that distinguishes the world champions.
